what's the fastest computer in the world
I don't know if I know the fastest
computer in the world
oh wait that's my computer this is
summit and it might not look like a
computer but I show you all these giant
towers work together and function as one
giant supercomputer summit or I guess
scientists call it Oh LCF for yes the
supercomputer developed by IBM for use
at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and as
of November 2018 it's the fastest
computer in the world it's capable of
200 petaflop s-- and if that wasn't
enough it's also the third most energy
efficient in the world I can't even
understand what the rest of the things
mean but they sound really amazing for
reference in Intel Core i5 3570 Ivy
Bridge 4 core 3 point 4 gigahertz is
capable of 105 gigaflops and if we do
the math that's literally only zero
point zero zero zero one zero five pedal
ops here we have a chart showing the
huge difference from this computer to
inferior ones okay mm-hmm
this is the Nvidia the supercomputer is
made of nodes powered by power nine CPUs
and Tesla Volta GPUs the summit system
uses six of these CPUs in each node here
we see the six CPUs laid out and the
summit is made of 4,600 of these nodes
but why why would someone need a
computer this fast well I would argue
that who doesn't want a faster computer
I mean it does raise the question like
how what can this computer do well this
computer was commissioned by the US
Department of Energy and they awarded a
three hundred and twenty five million
dollar contract in 2014 to IBM Nvidia
and a company called Mellanox and with
this contract they actually built two
supercomputers obviously one of them is
summit because that's what this video is
about but the other one is Sierra and it
turns out that Sierra is actually the
second best supercomputer in the world
and by best I mean fastest while Sierra
was built for nuclear weapons
simulations some it was built for a
civilian scientific research and the
research that people are doing with the
summit is gonna actually help us with
cosmology medicine climatology and
probably a bunch of other things that
might help us in everyday life
apparently it can do things like
simulate how humans will break during
Mars landing a NASA team seems to be
using supercomputing to evaluate a
retropropulsion power descent to the
Martian surface and we can see it I
guess happening here Wow
